“I Have A Family, Can I Still Travel?”

“I Have A Family, Can I Still Travel?”

If you are a nurse looking to travel and have a family, don’t stress! It is absolutely possible to be a traveling nurse with a family. There are a few ways that you can do this: bring your family with you, block your schedule so you can go back home after you finish your work week, or just leave your family home for a few weeks.

In the past, we have had a nurse take his entire family, dog included, on a travel assignment. In cases like this, we actually help you find housing for you and your family. You just have to tell us what you’re looking for and we do the rest. If you’re worried about the children and schooling, you can either do homeschooling or just travel in the summer. Every child loves a great summer vacation story to tell their friends!

Traveling Nurses travel back to see their families

On another hand, you can work with the facility to block your schedule so you are able to go home for the remainder of the week and be with your family. In my time placing nurses on contracts, I have found that it is common for facilities to be flexible if you have legitimate requests. So if you don’t want to move away from home for all 7 days in a week, give it a shot and see if this is an option for you.

Lastly, and this may sound crazy, just leave your family behind for the duration of your contract if they are not able to travel with you. It’s happened before, so you wouldn’t be the first person to do it. Contracts vary from 4 to 13 weeks long, which is awesome if you can’t bring your family with you. You can take a short travel contract and then go home afterwards to spend some time with your family and repeat the process. You can always take longer contracts if you are willing to stay away from your family for a longer period of time. On the bright side, your family members can ALWAYS visit you while you’re away!

Traveling with a family IS possible, just look into your options and let us know how we can help you!
